"Kill the Indian in him, and save the man". A quote from Captain Richard Henry Pratt's speech later used as the motto for The Carlisle Indiana Industrial School. Describing his philosophy of assimilation, he delivered the speech in 1892 in Denver, Colorado during the National Conference of Charities and Correction. The ideas Pratt expressed in his speech was the prominent inspiration for the Carlisle Indian School (founded 1879) and other boarding schools across the country. Civilizing and Americanizing were the prominent goals of this school. Many children passed away attending Carlisle, but two have yet been returned home.
